FIRST GENERATION DEFINITION

The term ‘FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT’ means—(A) An individual both of whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree; or (B) In the case of any individual who regularly resided with and received support from only one parent, an individual whose only such parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree.

Supporting First-Generation Aggies

NMSU is committed to intentional First-Generation efforts and is dedicated to supporting and celebrating students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree.

We envision a campus culture where first-generation students at NMSU are recognized, uplifted, and fully equipped to succeed. Through programs, institutional advocacy, and strong partnerships across campus and community, we aim to close gaps and foster a future in which every first-generation Aggie graduates with confidence, purpose, and a sense of achievement.

In alignment with NMSU’s land-grant mission and commitment to access and student success, our collaborative interdisciplinary efforts provide comprehensive support services, mentorship, and community engagement opportunities that empower first-generation students to thrive academically, socially, and professionally. We strive to build a strong sense of belonging and pride, helping students navigate the university experience and achieve their personal and educational goals. These efforts are a collective effort within various individuals across our system.
